How to Create a Website

The starting point for creating your first website is to stop and ask yourself why you want a website in the first place.

If you blindly start researching you will likely run into things you don't know you don't need. I've spent a lot of time learning things that ended up being obsolete or even detrimental to my end goal. Save yourself time by thinking about what it is you really want and leave the "how" for later.

Below are 3 reasons people get motivated to make websites. Consider each one carefully, and start with the one most relevent to you.

*Note*
For the initial launch of Tastyseed, only the tutorial for Reason #1 is complete and available.

Top 3 Reasons People Create Websites:

Reason #1: To Learn.

You have a desire to actually learn how websites are created, how they function, and how to code them yourself. You don't mind getting into the technical side of things, and you are comfortable with a longer time investment since you will be learning a variety of different coding languages, principles and philosphies, all before you actually get to make anything.

(Don't worry, it's worth it!)

Reason #2: To Share and Manage Information.

Above all, you want a solution to your needs.

Maybe you want a way to display a family photo gallery.
Maybe you want to write a blog about your life as a racecar driver.
As a business owner you are looking for a simple way to communicate with customers. Maybe you need a...

  • Project management tool
  • Knowledge base of frequently asked questions for your business
  • Video gallery
  • Social Network
  • Socially-ranked content aggregator
  • Way to find and interact with Starcraft fans all over the world.
The great thing is that these website engines already exist and are given out for free! All you need to do is learn what each package can do, where to find them, and how to use them.

Reason #3: To Make Money.

You are looking for a way to sell actual products (e-commerce)
or create something of value online, for the sake of monetizing it.

Examples (aside from selling actual products)

  • Tools and solutions.
    • Search Engines and directories
    • Downloadable software applications or addons
    • Any web based tool (send a fax, store pics, text msg, etc)
  • Personally developed content
    • Blogs
    • Informative sites / news sites
  • User generated content
    • Social Networks
    • Socially-ranked content aggregators
    • Any online community (forums, wikis, craiglist, etc)
